What Is the Difference Between Redacting and Whiteout

Updated 2026-10-25 · 7 min read · by Gold PDF

The difference between redacting and Whiteout is that redaction deletes the hidden content from the PDF, while Whiteout only paints a white box over it. After Whiteout, the original text is still in the file and can be copied, searched or uncovered; after a real redaction, it no longer exists anywhere in the document.

Quick steps

  1. Ask one question: would it matter if the reader saw what is underneath?
  2. If no, Whiteout is fine. Cover the area and type or place new content on top.
  3. If yes, use redaction. In Gold PDF press R, drag a box over the content, and press Ctrl+S.
  4. Close the saved file and reopen it.
  5. Search with Ctrl+F for a word that was hidden. There should be no results after a redaction.
  6. Drag across the area, copy, and paste into Notepad. Nothing from underneath should appear.

Redacting vs Whiteout at a glance

Both tools put a shape on the page, which is why they are easy to confuse. What happens to the content under the shape is completely different.

The short version: Whiteout changes what the page looks like, and redaction changes what the file contains.

Why Whiteout does not hide anything

A PDF page is built from layers of objects: text, images and vector shapes, drawn one after another. When you add Whiteout, the editor adds one more object, a white rectangle, on top of the existing text. A PDF viewer draws the text first and then paints the rectangle over it, so on screen the words seem to vanish.

The text object is untouched, though. Anything that reads the file rather than looking at the picture still finds it:

This is the same problem as a black box drawn with a shape tool. The colour makes no difference. Does drawing a black box redact a PDF walks through the tests in more detail.

What redaction does differently

Redaction starts with a box too, but the box is an instruction, not the final result. When the file is saved, the editor removes everything inside that area from the page: the characters of text, the parts of images and the drawn lines. The bar is then placed where the content used to be, so the reader can see that something was taken out.

In Gold PDF, the Redact tool is R. Drag a box over each item you want removed, then press Ctrl+S. Each page that contains a redaction is rebuilt: the page is rendered as a high-resolution image with the bars burned in, and the remaining words are added back as an invisible text layer so the rest of the page can still be searched and copied. The redacted words are not part of that layer. Pages without redactions are left as they were.

Because the content is gone, there is nothing to move, copy or extract. That is what makes redaction suitable for a bank number, a patient name or a witness address, and Whiteout unsuitable for the same job. For removing text without leaving any bar at all, see how to permanently remove text from a PDF.

When to use Whiteout and when to redact

Whiteout is not a bad tool. It is a layout tool, and it is useful when you are changing how a page looks and nothing underneath matters.

Whiteout is fine for:

Redact instead when:

If you are unsure, redact. A redaction that was not needed costs nothing; a Whiteout that should have been a redaction cannot be pulled back once the file has been sent.

The special case: replacing text

A common reason people reach for Whiteout is to change a value, such as a price, a date or a name, by covering the old one and typing the new one on top. The old value is still in the file, sitting directly under the new one, and a copy-paste reveals both.

The better approach is to edit the text itself. In Gold PDF press E, click the line, and change the words. Editing with E also rebuilds the page on save, so the original wording does not survive under the new text. The full steps are in how to change a price in a PDF.

How to tell which one a PDF used

If you receive a PDF with blank or blacked-out areas, you can check how they were made in a minute:

  1. Search. Press Ctrl+F and type a word you expect to be hidden, or just a common word such as "the" and watch whether a hit lands on a covered area.
  2. Select. Drag across the covered area. If text highlights underneath, it is a cover.
  3. Copy and paste. Paste the selection into Notepad. Any words that come out were never removed.
  4. Click the shape. In an editor, a Whiteout or drawn box can usually be selected and moved. A redacted area cannot, because the bar is part of the rebuilt page.

If you are checking your own file before you send it, use the full list in how to check if a PDF redaction is secure. If you discover that someone else sent you a document with covered rather than redacted personal data, let them know rather than spreading it further.

Does a white redaction bar make sense?

Some people want the removed area to blend into the page, for example on a document that will be printed. The colour of the bar is a separate question from whether the content was removed. What matters is that the redaction step deleted the content under the box.

That said, black bars are the convention for a reason. A visible bar tells the reader that something was deliberately removed. A white gap can look like an editing error, or like the document was quietly altered, which can cause problems with courts, auditors or anyone who needs to trust the copy. Unless you have a specific reason, keep the bars visible.

What Gold PDF does and does not do

Gold PDF is a free, offline PDF editor for Windows with both kinds of tool. Its plain Whiteout only covers: it is meant for tidying pages, and the content underneath stays in the file. Its Redact tool (R) removes the content under each box when you save, by rebuilding only the pages that contain redactions, and it can run OCR on scans (Ctrl+Shift+O, English and Hebrew bundled) so scanned text can be found and redacted. Files stay on your computer throughout. It does not decide for you which tool to use or find sensitive words automatically; searching and reading each page is still your job, and testing the saved file is the step that proves it worked. It runs on Windows only, not on Mac, Linux or phones. For an overview, see Redact a PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Does Whiteout remove text from a PDF?

No. Whiteout places a white shape on top of the page. The text underneath is still in the file, so it can be selected, copied, searched or revealed by moving the shape in another editor.

When is Whiteout the right tool?

When nothing under it is secret. Hiding a stray mark, a smudge on a scan or an old logo before you type new content over it are all fine uses. If the reader must not learn what was there, use redaction instead.

Is a black box the same as redaction?

Not by itself. A black rectangle drawn with a shape or highlight tool is a cover, just like Whiteout in a darker colour. Redaction is the step that deletes the content under the box when the file is saved.

Can I redact with a white box instead of a black bar?

The colour of the box is not what makes it secure; removing the content is. Black bars are the convention because they show the reader that something was removed on purpose, which avoids confusion and accusations of hidden editing.

How can I tell which one was used on a PDF I received?

Drag across the covered area and copy it into Notepad, or search for a word you think is underneath. If text comes back, it was covered, not redacted.
